BSc Biotechnology, Chemistry, Botany

It is a three-year (six semesters) under-graduate programme, conducted in affiliation to Bengaluru North University.


In this course, biotechnology, chemistry and botany are taught as optional subjects (semesters 1 to 6), with equal emphasis on each of these three subjects. In addition, english language and an optional language are also taught during semesters 1 to 4.

In addition, other subjects like Environment and Public Health, Indian Constitution, are also taught as part of this course curriculum from semester 1 to 4. The practical papers in all three core subjects (Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Botany) focuses on experiential learning through custom designed laboratory experiments.

Biotechnology is a multidisciplinary science that involves the application of scientific and engineering principles to enable processing of materials by biological agents, to provide an array of novel, value added products and tools. This subject covers areas such as cell biology, plant biotechnology, animal biotechnology, genetics, immunology, recombinant DNA technology, biostatistics, biophysics and biochemistry.

Chemistry is the study of composition, structure, properties and reactions of matter. Therefore, this study is central to understanding many other scientific disciplines. All human activities deal with the material world which consists of chemicals-both natural and manufactured. Contributions of chemistry to the modern society occur in diverse fields such as pharmaceuticals, polymers, agricultural chemicals, petroleum products, and biotechnology. It also plays an important role in the cleaning up of the environment, improving methods of producing, processing and packaging of food, and making automobiles more safe and fuel-efficient.

Botany is a broad field of science dealing with the scientific study of plants. Major topics that are covered are algae, fungi, lichens, mosses, ferns, conifers and flowering plants. Some important aspects include diversity of non-vascular plants, microbiology, viruses, bacteria, cyanobacteria, phycology, mycology, plant pathology, bryophytes and plant anatomy, pteridophytes, palaeobotany, environmental biology and phytogeography, gymnosperms and embryology of angiosperms, taxonomy, economic botany, molecular biology, genetic engineering, biotechnology, plant physiology, cytology, evolution and plant breeding.


Candidate should have passed Pre-University course, 12th standard, or any other equivalent examination, with biology as one of the optional subjects.
